Sick and jobless

today's action

Toni Park, a single mom with four kids, is a restaurant worker without access to benefits. Though she works hard to provide for her family, sometimes circumstances outside of her control threaten to ravage their economic future. For instance, her daughter recently contracted a rare illness, causing Toni to miss two months of work in order to care for her and forfeiting the income she might have otherwise brought home.

As the only industrialized nation without paid sick days for its workers, the United States leaves countless sole breadwinners like Toni to face the impossible choice between their jobs and taking care of themselves or their families when someone is ill. No American should ever have to sacrifice a paycheck - and possibly a job – because of something they cannot control.

If passed, The Healthy Families Act would guarantee employees one paid hour off for each 30 hours worked, enabling them to earn up to seven paid sick days a year. Sign the petition demanding that Congress pass this important bill, granting all American workers paid sick days. With the U.S. House and Senate currently on recess, we have one month to garner the support needed to get this legislation passed!
