| | While the nation mourns the recent mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado and a Sihk Temple in Wisconsin, yet another gun-related incident occurred this Monday; just two blocks from Texas A&M University a gunman shot and killed a police officer and a civilian, while wounding several others. These tragic events have reignited the national debate on U.S. gun laws, particularly around the now expired Federal Assault Weapons Ban (FAWB) - a 1994 law prohibiting the civilian use of assault weapons (like the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle that James Holmes used in the Aurora massacre.) As the presidential debates draw closer, many look to the candidates to take a stand on FAWB. While President Obama backed the ban on assault weapons during his 2008 candidacy, he has neglected to take action on curbing gun violence during his last four years in office. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney signed a statewide ban on assault weapons when he served as Massachusetts Governor, yet the Presidential hopeful now says he opposes any new restrictions.
